Here it is! I am announcing that I am formally starting my own business — vadis naturals. I will sell my own handcrafted laundry soaps, household cleaners and cold-processed soaps!
“Vadis what?”
That’s the first question I get when I announce my new business name. Followed shortly by some version of why and where. This very first post is dedicated to sharing the background on my business and its name.
So first off, where did the name come from. For those who know me now, the ‘natural’ part isn’t too hard to figure out. I will be using natural ingredients in my products, staying away from the harsh additives that interfere in so many ways with our bodies. The details of my neurosis is best saved for another post. But what about ‘vadis?’
Vadis is the name of my paternal grandmother. It’s not a real pretty name and honestly my siblings and I used to giggle about it. Well, so did my mom — but don’t tell my dad!!
My grandma Vadis was a very proper woman who kept an immaculate home. I had the privilege of living with her for a few years while I was in college, witnessing first-hand her methods of housekeeping. Though she had a hired housekeeper weekly, she (and I) cleaned daily. On several occasions she commented to me that she would have loved to have played around with chemicals and develop or invent a new cleaning product. So it’s in the genes!
But the significance for me doesn’t stop there. In my adulthood I began to wonder where my grandma’s parent’s came up with the name. In looking through genealogy it doesn’t appear to be a family name. I asked my dad about it. As far as he knows, the name came from the latin phrase, “quo vadis?” So in the early 1900′s, either from book or other pop-culture method, this phrase was popular and her parent’s found it beautiful.
What does “quo vadis” mean. Translated, it goes something like this: “where are you going?” or “whither goest thou?”
So where are you going? I am going green and clean.
vadis naturals — go clean. go green.
